The College of Sciences is one of the largest colleges in Xi'an University of Science and Technology, formerly known as the Basic Courses Department of Xi'an Mining Institute.After decades of development, it now has 4 master programs in second-level disciplines: solid mechanics, engineering mechanics, applied mathematics and physical electronics.The College also has 2 undergraduate majors: engineering mechanics and mathematics and applied mathematics.The College of Sciences consists of 5 departments: Engineering Mechanics Department, Mathematics Department I, Mathematics Department II, Applied Physics Department and Engineering Graphics Department.The College currently has 5 laboratories, including Physics Experiment Center, Mechanics Experiment Center, Graphics and Image Laboratory, Applied Mathematics Laboratory and Mathematical Modeling Laboratory, which undertake the experimental teaching tasks of related courses in the whole XUST.
The College of Sciences attaches great importance to the construction of the team of teachers with business proficiency and reasonable structure.The College of Sciences has 143 faculty members, including 122 teachers, 15 experimental technicians and 6 administrators. Among the teachers, there are 22 professors and 34 associate professors. There are 52 teachers with doctoral degree and 53 with master's degree, and they account for 86% of the total number of teachers.
In recent years, the College of Sciences has made great achievements by adhering to the philosophy of "health, happiness, progress, flexibility, harmony and development", talent team construction, teaching-centered path, and scientific research and social services.In undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, the College of Sciences undertakes the teaching tasks of public courses and some professional courses in mathematics, mechanics, physics and cartography. Since 2003, it has established one national excellent course, one provincial bilingual teaching demonstration course and more than 10 school-level excellent courses. It has one provincial teaching team and one school-level teaching team, undertakes 3 educational reform projects at or above the provincial level and more than 40 educational reform projects at the school level, and has won 6 teaching achievement awards at or above the provincial level and more than 10 teaching achievement awards at the school level and has published more than 20 textbooks or monographs.In terms of scientific research, since 2008, it has undertaken more than 10 National Natural Science Foundations of China and more than 40 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, with accumulated funds reaching more than 20 million yuan.The College has published more than 200 papers in important journals at home and abroad, among which more than 60 papers have been indexed by three international index systems, namely, SCI, EI and ISTP.In the training of students, the students of the College of Sciences have won the National Mathematical Modeling Competition for College Students, the National English Contest for College Students, the National Zhou Peiyuan Mechanics Competition for College Students, and the Higher Mathematics Competition in Shaanxi Province for more than 40 person-times per year. Based on the subject competitions, students' second class, and college-specific activities, the students have showed "solid foundation, high quality, and strong skills".In recent years, the postgraduate entrance examination rate has remained at about 40%, and outstanding students have been admitted to 211 and 985 colleges such as Zhejiang University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Northwestern Polytechnical University and Chinese Academy of Sciences for further study.
