The history of Art College of Xi'an University of Science and Technology dates back to 1995 when the Architectural Engineering Department set up the interior decoration major. In May, 2004, relevant teachers and students of art design major of College of Architecture and Civil Engineering and those of industrial design major of College of Mechanical Engineering jointly established the Art Department, which was later renamed as the Art College of Xi'an University of Science and Technology.
The Art College has one master's degree program in the first-level discipline of design, one master's degree program in the second-level discipline of industrial design, and four undergraduate majors of product design, environmental design (with three streams of interior design, landscape design, and display design), visual communication design and animation.There are 64 faculty members, including 51 full-time teachers, 4 laboratory teachers and 8 administrative staff in the Art College.Among the full-time teachers, 15 teachers have senior titles and 35 teachers have intermediate titles; There are 9 postgraduate supervisors and 4 teachers with doctoral degree; Teachers with master's degree or above account for 82% of the total number of full-time teachers in the College.The College devotes much attention to scientific research and accumulation of achievements. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, it was approved for 5 national projects, 7 provincial and ministerial projects, 24 bureau-level projects, etc., with a total project payment of over 6.8 million yuan.Teachers have won 27 awards in teaching competition at school-level or above and five awards in teaching achievement, published 29 teaching materials or monographs, been approved for 19 projects of teaching reform, 8 projects of developing model courses, and 14 projects of teaching materials.
Over 1010 postgraduates and undergraduates are studying in the College.Students of the College have won a good variety of awards in professional design competitions at home and abroad such as "Reddot Design Award" in Germany, "iF Design Award" in Germany, "IDEA Awards" in the United States, "Asian Design Academic Year Award", "Animation Academy Awards", and awards in the National College Students Industrial Design Competition, the "IDEA-KING" International Landscape Planning & Design Competition. They have been awarded 42 national utility model patents and over 400 design patents.Since graduates of the College are widely received and recognized by enterprises and public institutions, the College has won the honorary title of "Advanced Employment Unit" for many times.
Since 2016, the College has enrolled students on the basis of discipline. This means that the freshman will receive general education for undergraduates instead of choosing the major after being admitted.After the first academic year, the College would organize students to apply for their own majors and assign students to majors in order to continue their second year of study based on their academic performance in courses of first academic year, with full respect for their professional interests and social needs.The policy of enrolling students on the basis of discipline breaks the convention of enrolling students according to major, comes as a major step in educational reform, and lays a solid foundation for bringing up versatile, capable and well-educated students with profound foundation and all-round development.
The College is well-equipped with excellent hardware and now has 1 school-level research institution: the Oriental and Western Culture Exchange Design Research Center; three college-level scientific research institutions: Design Center, Design and Art Theory Research Center, Art Practice and Creation Center; 1 Practical Training Center: 14 professional laboratories covering an area of 1,350㎡, including reverse engineering laboratory, screen printing laboratory, animation professional recording studio, woodworking laboratory, stop-motion animation laboratory, original painting laboratory, art photography laboratory, comprehensive training area and professional computer room. In addition, it has a professional painting and drawing studio with a capacity of 240 people spreading 606㎡and a design exhibition hall independently used by the College, occupying an area of 830㎡; it also boasts a school-level college student innovation and entrepreneurship platform. The College has singed agreement with social enterprises such as Anhui Dream Garden Sketching Gallery and Jiangsu Dafeng Oriental Creative Culture Industry Co., Ltd. for 30 practice (internship and sketching) bases.
