The College of Mechanical Engineering of Xi'an University of Science and Technology was formerly the major of mine electromechanical founded by Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1958.In 1958, Xi'an Mining Institute was separated from Xi'an Jiaotong University to run an independent school, and the major of mining electromechanical was one of the three majors that laid the foundation for the establishment of the school at that time.In 1959, the Mechanical and Electrical Department of Xi'an Mining Institute was established.After years of development, the Mechanical and Electrical Department grew apace in all aspects.In 1986, the Mechanical and Electrical Department was divided into the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering.And the College of Mechanical Engineering was established in June 2002.
The College has six departments, including Mechanical Design Department, Mechanical Manufacturing Department, Mechanical Electronics Department, Vehicle Engineering Department, Intelligent Manufacturing Department and Instrument Science and Technology Department.The College has been approved to grant a doctoral degree for the first-level discipline of mechanical engineering and a master's degree for the first-level discipline of instrument science and technology. Mechanical engineering is a key discipline in Shaanxi Province. In 2012, it was approved to set up a center for post-doctoral studies of mechanical engineering.At present, it has been approved to grant doctoral degrees in 7 second-level disciplines, master's degrees in 9 second-level disciplines, and 2 master's degrees of engineering.
The major of mechanical design, manufacturing and automation is a national characteristic major and a national first-class major. In 2017, the major of mechanical and electronic engineering passed the certification of engineering education major and was selected as a national first-class major. Meanwhile, the major of vehicle engineering was selected as a first-class major in Shaanxi Province.The College has high-level teaching platforms such as the National Joint Training Demonstration Base for Postgraduate Students with Engineering Degree, the Virtual Simulation Experimental Center for Fully Mechanized Mining Equipment of the Ministry of Education, the Innovation Experimental Zone for Talent Training Mode in Shaanxi Province, the Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center in Shaanxi Province, and the Shaanxi Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center. It also enjoys high-level discipline platforms including Shaanxi Coal Mine Electromechanical Engineering Technology Research Center, Shaanxi Coal Mine Electromechanical Equipment Intelligent Testing and Health Maintenance Key Laboratory, Shaanxi Coal Mine Electromechanical Equipment Intelligent Testing and Control Science and Technology Innovation Team. All of them have laid a solid foundation for the training of high-level talents.
The College has 110 faculty members, including 84 full-time teachers, 14 Ph.D. supervisors (5 part-time teachers), 53 postgraduate supervisors, 18 professors, and 29 associate professors.It has 1 two-way selected academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 4 foreign talents of flexible introduction, 3 distinguished professors in the "Shaanxi Hundred Talents Program", 1 young and middle-aged scientific and technological innovation pace-setter in Shaanxi Province, 1 youth talent of the "Shaanxi Thousand Talents Program", 1 member of the "Shaanxi Young Outstanding Talent Program in Higher Education", 2 "Shaanxi Renowned Teachers", 2 "Populus Euphratica Talents" at school level, 4 "Renowned Teachers" at school level and 1 new teaching talent at school level. The College also enjoys 2 provincial teaching teams.
In the past five years, the College has undertaken nearly 40 national scientific research projects such as the national "863 Program", the national green manufacturing system integration project, and the key/general/joint/youth project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, more than 100 provincial and ministerial-level projects such as Shaanxi Key R&D Plan, Shaanxi Science and Technology Overall Innovation Project Plan, and Shaanxi Natural Science Basic Research Project, as well as nearly 100 horizontal projects entrusted by Shendong Group, Shaanxi Coal and other enterprises. In addition, the College has published more than 600 academic papers and more than 20 monographs/teaching materials, and won more than 10 provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological progress awards and teaching achievement awards and thus formed a stable and characteristic research direction.
At present, there are more than 2,000 registered undergraduates, and master and doctoral students.In recent years, a large cohort of students has won laurels in various competitions and activities.Among them, nearly 300 people won awards such as the "Sun Yueqi Outstanding Student Scholarship", "National Outstanding Student Cadres", "Merit Students" and "National Science and Technology Competition Awards". Besides, significant achievements have been made in national competitions such as the National "Challenge Cup" Scientific and Technological Works Competition for College Students, the National Mechanical Innovation Design Competition for College Students, the National Engineering Training Comprehensive Ability Competition for College Students, the National Robot Creative Design Competition, and the China Energy Saving Competition.The student employment rate of the College has remained above 96%. A group of students have been admitted to famous universities at home and abroad for further study and some outstanding graduates have become the mainstay of famous enterprises such as Shenhua Group, Shaanxi Coal Group, Ningxia Coal Group, Haier, Midea and Gree.
For a long time, under the leadership of the Party and government, following the Party building strategy, the College coordinated development and made multiple remarkable achievements. It has won honorary titles such as "Advanced Unit for Comprehensive Management of Public Security", "Advanced Unit for Building a Clean and Honest Party Conduct" and "Advanced Sub-Party Committee" many times.Inspired by the school spirit of "Motivated and Self-driven", countless graduates from the College of Mechanical Engineering have taken root in the west and devoted themselves to the coal industry. Considering the lack of talents and technology, and the underdeveloped environment in west China, they played an irreplaceable role in the coal industry.On the great journey of the new era, we will remain true to our original aspiration and keep our mission firmly in mind.
