The College of Architecture and Civil Engineering was established in 2002.It originated from the Department of Architectural Engineering established in 1989, which can be traced back to the mine construction major (five-year undergraduate program) set up in the early days of the school's establishment in 1959.The College began to recruit undergraduates majoring in industrial and civil architecture in 1988. The Department of Architectural Engineering was established based on the majors of mine construction and industrial and civil architecture in 1989. And the College of Architectural and Civil Engineering was officially set up in 2002.After more than 60 years of development, the College has developed from one major of mine construction to five undergraduate majors, including civil engineering, architecture, urban and rural planning, water supply and drainage science and engineering, and urban underground space engineering.
There are 144 faculty members in the College, including 115 teachers, 14 laboratory staff, and 15 administrative staff.The College enjoys a robust faculty, including 15 Ph.D. supervisors, 65 postgraduate supervisors, 11 professors (senior engineers), 8 distinguished professors, 21 visiting/adjunct professors, 40 associate professors/senior engineers, one distinguished professor (scholar of the Shaanxi "Sanqin" Program), one member of the "Hundred Talents Program" of Shaanxi Province, one member of the "Thousand Talents Program" of Shaanxi Province, one member of the "Outstanding Talents in the New Century from the Ministry of Education", one "Renowned Teacher in Shaanxi Higher Education", one "Shaanxi Advanced Individual in Teachers' Ethics", one “Shaanxi Young Pace-setter", two "Young Scientific Stars of Shaanxi Province", one member of the "Shaanxi Outstanding Young Talent Support Program in Higher Education", and one "Shaanxi Top-notch Young Talent in Special Support Program".There are 2400 registered students in the College, including about 400 doctoral and master's students (including international students) and about 2000 undergraduates.
The College has five undergraduate majors, namely civil engineering (including architectural engineering, bridge and tunnel engineering, geotechnical and underground engineering), architecture, urban and rural planning, water supply and drainage science and engineering, and urban underground space engineering.Among them, the civil engineering major is a national characteristic major and a "first-class major" in Shaanxi Province. In 2010, it passed the undergraduate education evaluation of civil engineering major of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, and in 2015, it passed the re-evaluation and was granted a six-year validity period.The College has set up Excellent Courses in Civil Engineering and Sino-Australian (University of Tasmania, Australia) Cooperative Courses in Civil Engineering.
The College has also set up a center for post-doctoral studies in civil engineering. It has been approved to grant doctoral (master's) degrees in the first-level discipline of civil engineering. There are 6 second-level doctoral disciplines (geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, disaster prevention and mitigation engineering and protection engineering, bridge and tunnel engineering, heating and gas supply ventilation and air conditioning engineering, municipal engineering) and 7 second-level master's disciplines (geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, disaster prevention and mitigation engineering and protection engineering, bridge and tunnel engineering, heating and gas supply ventilation and air conditioning engineering, municipal engineering, architecture and urban green environment). Civil engineering is a key discipline in Shaanxi Province. In 2014, geotechnical engineering was approved to recruit scholar of the Shaanxi "Sanqin" Program, and civil water conservancy started to recruit graduate students to pursue professional master's degrees.
The College has well-equipped and advanced teaching and scientific research facilities, including one national virtual simulation experimental teaching center for mine construction engineering, onekey laboratory for geotechnical and underground engineeringin Xi'an, one experimental teaching demonstration center in Shaanxi Province, one experimental training center for civil engineering, one experimental training center for water supply and drainage science and engineering and more than 40 laboratories covering all majors of the College.There are more than 2,000 sets of experimental instruments and equipment, with a value of more than 40 million yuan and an area of more than 8,000 square meters.The College has fully incorporated scientific research into undergraduate coursework and opened all laboratories to teachers and students, which provides an important practice and research platform for personnel training. Various extracurricular scientific and technological competitions have been actively carried out and fruitful results have been achieved.
In recent years, the College has undertaken and completed more than 100 national, provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, and thus distinct discipline characteristics have been formed.Numerous research achievements with great implications have been made in terms of geotechnical mechanics and its numerical method, theory and technology of rock and soil reinforcement, coal roadway bolt support, blasting theory and technology, building structure calculation and reinforcement, bridge and tunnel structure detection and maintenance, water supply and drainage system optimization design and water pollution control, water resources utilization and protection, earthquake prevention and treatment of underground structures and development of new materials for engineering structures.In 2018, Professor Wang Xiaoli of our College won the Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award as the first Initiator and the first Initiator Unit.
The College has long adhered to the goal of cultivating applied and innovative talents with students as the center. Through an in-depth reform in personnel training pattern, upgrade in the curriculum system, strengthening of the construction of curriculum connotation, improvement of the practical teaching system, and innovation and entrepreneurship education, and carrying out various extracurricular scientific and technological academic competitions, we continuously improve the quality of personnel training and cultivate many high-level applied talents with a solid foundation, dedication, hard work spirit and popularity among employers.
