The College of Energy was established in July 1938 and originated from the Department of Mining and Metallurgy of National Northwest Institute of Technology, which was composed of Peiyang University Institute of Technology, Peking University Institute of Technology, Northeastern University Institute of Technology, and Jiaozuo Institute of Technology. The College can be traced back to the Department of Mining and Metallurgy of Peiyang University Institute of Technology in 1895.It was renamed the Department of Mining Engineering in 1952 and merged into Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1957. It is one of the three main departments of Xi'an Mining Institute established in 1958. The major of mining engineering is one of the earliest five-year undergraduate programs of mineral engineering in China. In 1994, it was renamed the Department of Resource Development and Management Engineering. In 1998, it resumed the name as the Department of Mining Engineering, and in 2002, it was renamed the College of Energy Engineering. In 1988, the Department of Architectural Engineering was established on the basis of the Teaching and Research Section of Shaft Engineering and Architectural Engineering. In 1998, the Department of Management Engineering was separated from management disciplines and established. And in 2016, the College of Safety Science and Engineering was established on the basis of the Department of Safety Engineering and the Department of Fire Protection Engineering.
The College has a doctor program in first-level discipline of "Mineral Engineering", a center for post-doctoral studies, two master's programs in "Heating, Gas Supply, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Engineering", and one program in "Master of Engineering". There are two undergraduate departments: Mining Engineering, and Construction Environment and Energy Application Engineering. It has formed a full-fledged three-level training system for undergraduate, master, and doctoral students. In 2019, the major "Mining Engineering" was approved as the national "first-class major". In 2020, the major "Construction Environment and Energy Application Engineering" was approved as the "first-class major" in Shaanxi Province.
By virtue of mining and coal, the College was established and prospered, so mineral engineering is the key discipline with advantages and characteristics of the College. In 1984, it was approved to grant a master's degree in mineral engineering. In 1998, mineral engineering was approved as a key discipline in Shaanxi Province. It was approved to grant a doctoral degree in the first-level discipline of mining engineering in 2000. It was approved to set up a center for post-doctoral studies in 2004.With a foothold in the west, it faces up to the whole country and even the world. With a focus on coal development and utilization, it aims at the frontier of mining science and technology and has developed five disciplines including safe and efficient mining of difficult coal seam, disaster control of mine rock, mechanics and engineering of mine rock mass, experimental technology and intelligent detection, and fine separation of coal and secondary resources.
The College currently has 88 faculty members, including 17 professors, 19 associate professors, 16 Ph.D. supervisors (including project Ph.D. supervisors), 36 postgraduate supervisors, and more than 10 part-time professors. It has a group of high-level teachers with reasonable age, educational background and professional title structure, such as National Outstanding Teachers, members of the Discipline Evaluation Group of the State Council, Changjiang Scholars, talents of the Ten Thousand Talents Program, and talents of the National One Million Talents project. It has three national platforms, including the State Key Laboratory of Green Coal Development in Western China (planning) and the Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Mining Engineering. It also has seven provincial and ministerial platforms, including the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for Mine Mining and Disaster Prevention in Western China.
In the past five years, the College has undertaken nearly 50 state-level projects and more than 700 horizontal projects entrusted by enterprises and published more than 400 academic papers, of which more than 170 were included in SCI/EI. It has published more than 20 academic monographs, obtained more than 40 national invention patents, participated in the formulation of industry standards and plans, carried out scientific popularization and industry personnel training, etc., and has a strong ability in social service. The College has won 3 second prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 second prize of National Teaching Achievement, 3 special awards and 31 first prizes at the provincial and ministerial levels.
On September 16, 2018, the College held a grand celebration meeting and commemorative events for the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Department of Mining Engineering. Honorary alumni, guests, and friends from all walks of life all gathered at the XUST to recall their wonderful youth and campus life.In the past 83 years, through the development of Northwest Institute of Technology, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an Mining Institute, and Xi'an University of Science and Technology, 61 professors have worked and studied at the College of Energy Engineering, making selfless contributions to the national energy cause.By the school motto of "Sincere conduct, self-resilience and hard-working", 11,980 outstanding graduates have been trained here successively.(Updated in April 2021)
