Recently, Education Working Committee of Shaanxi Provincial Committee issued the Circular of the Education Working Committee of Shaanxi Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China on Commending Advanced Units and Excellent Workers in Mental Health Education in Shaanxi Colleges and Universities from 2016 to 2020, Xi'an University of Science and Technology was awarded as the advanced unit of mental health education in Shaanxi colleges and universities from 2016 to 2020, and Wang Junni was awarded as an excellent worker in mental health education in Shaanxi colleges and universities from 2016 to 2020.
In recent years, Xi'an University of Science and Technology has attached great importance to the mental health education of college students, made great efforts in the effectiveness and innovation of various psychological work, and constantly improved its level of psychological education, forming a unique new pattern of psychological education.
Improve the teaching effect. In order to give full play to the role of the curriculum as the main channel in mental health education, in 2017, Xi'an University of Science and Technology organized full-time and part-time teachers of mental health to compile textbooks for compulsory courses of mental health for students, which included typical cases encountered by students in daily life, and lively classroom games and activities were added to enhance the attractiveness of the curriculum. The university also regularly holds mental health teachers' lecture activities, collective lesson preparation and discussion of teaching plans, so as to continuously improve the teaching quality of mental health courses. Combined with the characteristics of universities of science and technology, it also offers a variety of optional courses, such as Social Psychology, Management Psychology, Art Psychotherapy, Interpersonal Communication Psychology, etc., to continuously broaden students' knowledge. At present, 32 hours of compulsory mental health courses have been offered for students, including 20 hours of offline courses and 12 hours of online courses.
Standardize the crisis investigation process. Student crisis is related to campus security and stability. In 2018, according to the Mental Health Law, the university formulated the Handling Process and Work Plan for Students with Psychological Crisis, which clarified the referral and disposal process for students with various psychological disorders, and widely publicized and carefully interpreted it among counselors, providing a clear work plan for counselors to manage students in crisis. The school and the first class hospitals have established a green channel for referral of students in crisis, which is convenient for the timely referral of students. Experts from the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology of Xijing Hospital are regularly invited to the university to carry out campus psychological consultation activities for students with mental disorders, so as to answer questions for students in crisis. The school also carries out home visits for students in crisis, and the linkage between home and school jointly escorts students' mental health. The school insists on carrying out comprehensive psychological general test and monthly investigation for undergraduates and postgraduates every year, and conducts interviews, follow-up and counseling for students with high-risk problems.
Improve the teaching level of teachers. Full-time psychological teachers are the core of mental health work. The university strongly supports the professional development of this team and encourages individuals to participate in various high-level training and supervision. The university invites many well-known experts from all over the country to carry out group supervision for full-time teachers regularly (once every two weeks), so as to continuously improve the professional level of psychologists.
Enhance the ability to serve students. Counselors are the backbone of ideological and political education for college students. The university constantly creates various conditions, builds a platform for counselors' psychological training, provides sufficient financial support, and encourages counselors to participate in various mental health knowledge training. Seminars on students' psychological cases are held regularly, and deputy secretaries, counselors, managers and full-time psychological counselors are invited to actively participate in this activity, so as to work together to solve difficult cases and improve counselors' ability to deal with students' psychological problems. Full-time staff from the psychological center give lectures, and regularly carry out special training on psychological knowledge for counselors. The content is based on practical operation and practicability, which can continuously expand the counselors' psychological knowledge reserve and improve their ability to serve students.
Explore new support methods for special students. The university relies on the first batch of counselor studios— "Liuyuan Chasing Dreams" Academic Guidance Studio. For the service object - student with learning difficulties, it conducted a questionnaire survey and found out the reasons for the formation of students' academic difficulties. On this basis, targeted one-on-one individual psychological counseling, positive psychological group counseling, peer academic assistance and other assistance work were carried out, which effectively stimulated the positive academic attitude of students with academic difficulties and improved their academic achievements. According to the actual performance of students with learning difficulties, the university also edited and published the Case Collection of Students' Academic Problems for counselors to discuss and apply in their work.
