On June 1 and 2, the Northwest competition of the China Undergraduate Physicists Tournament (CUPT) was held in Xinjiang University. The two teams sent by our university competed with 42 teams from 18 other universities, including Xi'an Jiaotong University, Northwest Polytechnic University, Lanzhou University and Xinjiang University. After four rounds of heated debates among pros, cons and commentators and research presentations, our two teams won the first prize and the second prize, respectively.
To prepare for this competition, we have organized the Second Undergraduate Physics Academic Competition in our university from October to December of 2018, selecting the participants for the 2019 CUPT in the Northwestern competition area through preliminary, rematch and final. The College of Science also established a special team composed of 10 teachers to provide intensive training for the participants from February to May this year. In addition to finishing their teaching tasks, the instructors of the guidance group were also obligated to undertake counseling for the students. The instructors worked closely with each other, each assuming his responsibilities based on the expertise, and provided professional and detailed training for the students relying on the hardware and software conditions of the physics experiment center. The competition was strongly supported by school leaders, the Academic Affairs Office, the School of Science and other colleges. The teams of our university were offered a good opportunity to have an in-depth exchange of views with their peers in other colleges and universities and exhibit the achievements we have made in the teaching reform of physics courses and the cultivation of innovative talents.
Taking the International Young Physicists' Tournament (IYPT) as an example, the CUPT is a national competition sponsored by the Ministry of Education and the China Physical Science. It is recognized as one of the top competitions in the field of physics by Chinese universities.
