ESA-MOST Dragon Cooperation
2018 Dragon 4 Mid-term Results Symposium
19-22 June 2018, Xi’an, China
Website: http://dragon4.esa.int/2018-symp/
The Dragon program, commenced in 2004, is a cooperation between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of China. There have been 4 phases of the Dragon program, each lasting 4 years. Being the largest international cooperation for China in the field of earth observation, the Dragon program has been widely acknowledged as a great example for the China-Europe cooperation.
In the Dragon program, Chinese and European teams jointly undertake scientific research, organize training courses, and share remote sensing data. After 14 years of cooperation, the Dragon program has achieved impressive results and becomes more and more globally influential, largely promoting the communications between Chinese and European scientists (particularly young scientists), and enhancing the development of remote sensing technologies and their applications in earth observation.
The lastest and newest phase Dragon 4, commenced in July 2016 at the Wuhan Dragon 4 kick-off symposium and will be completed in 2020. The Dragon 4 is currently the most well-known China-Europe cooperation on remote sensing applications. It has 27 cooperation projects, involving over 600 scientists and most of the Chinese and European universities and research institutes working on remote sensing applications. There have been two years since the start of the Dragon 4, and it is now the time to systematically review and summarize the results produced during last two years, and to work out the plan for future cooperations. Given the above context, the 2018 Dragon 4 Mid-term Results Symposium will take place in Xi’an, China, on 19-22 June 2018.
In order to seek a better way for forest growing stock estimation, carbon stock estimation, land and resource survey, geographical condition monitoring, precision agriculture service, antique protection etc., the photogrammetry and remote sensing research team in the College of Geomatics, Xi’an University of Science and Technology (XUST), has been conducting in-depth studies on image processing theories, estimation of extremum image correlation, mathematical morphology enhancement, and the theory and technology of high-resolution remote sensing image processing. The team has also been studying the digital close-range photogrammetry, 3D laser scanner, active remote sensing technology, multi-lens tilt photogrammetry system, and has applied them to UAV photogrammetry experiments. The above research has yielded important theoretical and application outcomes, which are influential in the field.
In order to promote international collaborations, enhance academic influences, and celebrate the 60th anniversary, XUST has made an application to the MOST for the joint organization of the 2018 Dragon 4 Mid-term Results Symposium with Chang’an University. The MOST has approved the application in the No. [2018]005 document issued by the National Remote Sensing Center of China (NRSCC).
